Birth Preparation & Postpartum Recovery

Feel prepared for birth. Supported and empowered through your recovery.

Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery bring significant changes to your body. Whether you're experiencing discomfort during pregnancy, preparing for delivery, or navigating life after birth, pelvic health physiotherapy can help you feel more comfortable, informed, and confident along the way.

At Trail Physio, care is tailored to your individual needs, goals, and birth preferences.

Pelvic Physiotherapy During Pregnancy

You don't have to wait until after your baby arrives to address pelvic health concerns.

Physiotherapy during pregnancy can help with:

  • Pelvic girdle, hip, and lower back pain

  • Urinary leakage and bladder concerns

  • Constipation and difficulty with bowel movements

  • Pelvic pressure or discomfort

  • Pain with intercourse

  • Staying active and exercising comfortably throughout pregnancy

Your initial assessment includes a discussion of your symptoms, health history, and goals, followed by an individualized treatment plan to help you feel your best throughout pregnancy.

Preparing for Labour & Birth

Birth prep is about understanding your body and learning practical strategies to support you through labour, delivery, and early recovery.

Whether you're planning a vaginal birth, cesarean delivery or are unsure what might happen - we can help you prepare.

Sessions may include:

  • Understanding the pelvic floor's role during labour and delivery

  • Pushing techniques, breathing, and pelvic floor relaxation

  • Labour and birth positions

  • Perineal massage and strategies that may help reduce the risk of tearing

  • Preparing for a planned cesarean birth

  • What to expect during the first few weeks of recovery

Our goal is to help you approach birth with practical knowledge and strategies that suit your individual circumstances.

Postpartum Preparation - Before Baby Arrives

One of the most valuable times to prepare for postpartum recovery is actually before giving birth.

During a prenatal postpartum preparation session, we'll discuss what to expect as your body heals and how to support your recovery while adjusting to life with a newborn.

You'll learn about early postpartum movement, pelvic floor recovery, managing everyday activities, and gentle exercises that may be appropriate during the first four weeks after either vaginal or cesarean birth.

Recovery doesn't end at your six-week checkup.

Whether you're six weeks, six months, or several years postpartum, pelvic health physiotherapy can help address symptoms, restore function, and support your return to the activities you enjoy.

Common reasons to seek postpartum physiotherapy include:

  • Urinary or bowel leakage

  • Pelvic heaviness or prolapse symptoms

  • Perineal or cesarean scar discomfort

  • Pain with intercourse

  • Abdominal wall concerns, including diastasis recti

  • Back, hip, or pelvic pain

  • Returning to exercise, running, or strength training

Your assessment and treatment plan will be based on your recovery, symptoms, and personal goals. An internal pelvic floor examination may be offered when appropriate, with your informed consent, but is never required to receive care.

Support Beyond the Six-Week Checkup

There's no single timeline for postpartum recovery, and you don't need to be experiencing a major problem to benefit from physiotherapy.

Whether you're preparing for your first birth, recovering from your third, or finally addressing symptoms you've been living with for years, we're here to help you move forward with confidence.
